How to hire an offshore web development team safely
Many companies build their websites and software with remote teams in another country. Done well, it saves money without slowing the project down. Done badly, it costs more than hiring locally. Here is how to tell the difference.
Why companies hire remote teams
Hiring senior developers locally is expensive and slow in many markets, and most website or software projects don't need a full-time team forever. A remote team gives you experienced people for the length of the project, then lighter support after launch.
Time zones: what actually works
Overlap matters more than distance. Two to four shared working hours a day is enough for calls and quick decisions, with the rest of the day for focused building. Agree that window at the start and keep it fixed.
Checklist before you hire
Ask every shortlisted team these questions.
- Will I speak with the people writing the code, or an account manager?
- Is the scope and price fixed before work starts?
- Are the code repository, domain and cloud accounts registered to my company?
- Can we start with a small paid milestone?
- Can you show live projects and introduce me to a past client?
- Which hours will we overlap, and how fast do you reply outside them?
Red flags
- No live examples, only mockups
- Very low hourly rates with no fixed scope
- Code or domain kept in the agency's name, with no way to move hosting elsewhere
- Pressure to pay the full amount up front
How Cassnetic Tech works with clients abroad
We are a partner-led team in Kuala Lumpur. The two founders run every project directly, scope and price are fixed before work starts, and the code repository and domain are registered to you. We keep in touch on WhatsApp, Slack or email and video calls during an agreed overlap window.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to outsource web development?
It is if the contract fixes scope and price, you own the code and domain, and payment is tied to milestones you can check in a browser.
Why outsource web development to Malaysia?
Malaysian teams typically work in English, sit in a GMT+8 time zone that overlaps with much of Asia-Pacific and the European morning, and charge mid-range rates.
